Where to start in buying a ukulele?

My boyfriend is a huge geek for musical toys, so I want to get him a ukulele for his birthday. I don't know instruments, though, and I have no idea how to even start narrowing in on a decent ukulele. If I'm hoping to spend around $100-$150, what should I look for in a decent quality uke?
